A Dream Fulfilled

Note; Maribel Hernández was featured in the January Que Pasa along with her new husband, Sergio. Below, you’ll find out more about Maribel and her journey to independence within the ICC family.

Thirteen-year-old Maribel was a shy and quiet girl when she arrived at the El Oasis Children’s village in July 2015. Her mother had died and her father was unable to provide care for her and her nine-year old sister.

At El Oasis, Maribel had few friends, but they were well chosen. In her relationships with adults, she was always respectful; in her assigned tasks, she was responsible and dedicated.

She distinguished herself by being diligent in her studies, dedicated to doing her best, and avoiding the problems that plague teenagers her age. These character traits have helped her gradually realize her goals.

Eventually, Maribel was able to attend boarding school at Linda Vista in Chiapas, Mexico. She shared that, “When I finished high school, I didn’t know what I was going to study, so I asked God for guidance.

I remembered that when I was in high school, we did a medical brigade, and I really enjoyed it. Since then, God was already giving me the answer.”

After deep reflection, she decided that she wanted to serve God and people directly: she would study nursing, which took an additional four years of study.

Graduation took place in May 2024. Then, after completing her social service requirement, Maribel volunteered at a naturopathic clinic.

She shared that, “I met new people, especially a good, spiritual, hardworking young man. I used to pray to God to put someone in my path who shared my aspirations.

God introduced me to one of His most precious treasures!” Once Sergio finished his training in natural health treatments, he asked Maribel to marry him. And she said, “Yes!” On October 17, 2025, they were married.

Maribel has fulfilled her dreams. She overcame adversity, completed her studies, and found a partner who shares her aspirations. And the good news continues…Maribel is expecting to give birth to a son in August!

Maribel offers this testimony of thankfulness and praise: “I see God’s hand in my life. I believe I am one of His favorite daughters. I want to serve Him as a sign of gratitude. Thank you, God, for giving me this opportunity through Oasis and the donors!” Thank you for your love and care for children like Maribel who are truly grateful for your support!
