Your support is helping to transform the lives of orphan and vulnerable children. One such child who is benefiting from the care you help to provide is 12-year-old Luis who is in the 3rd grade at the Los Pinos School in Guatemala.
As is often the case in poorer communities, family dynamics can be quite challenging. Luis lost his father a few years ago. His mother moved into her parent’s home along with Luis and his sibling. When Luis’ grandfather also died, his grandmother left the family. Luis’s mother had to care for her two children as well as her own younger siblings. Luis’ mother worked in the cardamom fields and had to leave her children with relatives in her absence.
Three years ago, the Los Pinos Church held an evangelistic campaign in the village of Sabanetas, and among those in attendance were Luis and some of his family members. Luis decided to be baptized and continued to attend church regularly.
Sabanetas is about 6 miles (10 km) from Los Pinos. In 2025, Luis was able to attend school by riding the van that transported students from that community. This year, however, his mother did not have the money to pay to transport him to school.
No money for transportation. No school for Luis.
During a visit to the community, Joel Carpio, Los Pinos director, found out that Luis and other family members were not attending school because they had fallen behind on transportation payments the previous year, so they were no longer allowed to ride the van.
During the discussions that ensued, Joel offered the opportunity for Luis to become part of one of the homes at Los Pinos. Luis’ mother agreed, and Luis eagerly accepted. He has adapted very well to life at Los Pinos. Now that he is back in school, Luis has lofty aspirations for becoming a surgeon.
